Coaching and Mentoring

Livewell Southwest is dedicated to ensuring its staff are supported and receive the development opportunities their career deserves.  Staff from Livewell Southwest can be matched with experienced coaches to facilitate their professional growth through the Multiagency Coaching Network.

The Multi Agency Coaching Network has been created by local public sector organisations to provide personal development and support to its workforce, whilst encouraging the wider sharing of best practice.

Coaching

“Coaching is the art of facilitating another person’s learning, development and performance.  Through coaching, people are able to find their own solutions, develop their own behaviours and attitudes.”
Gilbert & Whittleworth (2009) The OSCAR Coaching Model

Mentoring

Mentoring has similarities with coaching in that it involves the use of the same models and skills of generous listening and skilful questioning.  However mentoring differs in that it tends to describe a relationship in which a more experienced colleague uses his or her greater knowledge and understanding of the work or workplace to support the development of a less experienced member of staff.  At its best, the benefits are reciprocal as those acting as a mentor develop their facilitation skills, understanding of other work spheres and increase job satisfaction.

“Off-line help by one person to another in making significant transitions in knowledge, work or thinking.”
Clutterbuck & Megginson (1999) Mentoring Executives and Directors.
