Dental Service - Dental Access Centre

The Dental Service provides dental care for those in pain and who cannot access dental treatment, who do not have a regular dentist or who are not under a current course of treatment with a GDP.

On referral, the service provides:

  • Comprehensive dental care for children 
  • Comprehensive dental care those with special needs
  • Minor oral surgery
  • Dental phobic treatment
  • Paediatric dental extractions and comprehensive dental care for special care patients under general anaesthetic.

Referrals are accepted from GDPs, GPs and other professional bodies.  Children may self refer or parents/guardians may refer children to our service.  On arrival at reception you will be asked to fill in a medical history form and the relevant NHS paperwork.  If you are taking medication it would be helpful if you bring a list with you.

The service is also responsible for:

  • A fluoride varnishing preventative project in 16 schools
  • Dental screening – of special schools
  • Epidemiology – data collection within local school population.

Please note the following:

  • Special care provides treatment for patients with physical, sensory, intellectual, mental, medical, emotional or social special needs
  • A wheel chair platform service is available
  • Children - dentistry for the 0-18 year olds
  • Exodontia dentistry under general anaesthetic for 2-16 year olds
  • Orthodontics treatment is provided for children who are patients of the service; this is consultant led

  • All appointments must be booked.  To make an appointment, contact the Dental Access Centre
  • Opening times: Monday, 8am - 7pm and Tuesday - Friday, 8:45am - 5pm.
  • Telephone lines are open 8:45am - 5pm, Monday to Friday


NHS Charges

We charge current NHS charges.  You do not have to pay for treatment if, when the treatment starts, you are:

  • Aged under 18
  • Under 19 and in full-time education
  • Pregnant or have had a baby in the previous 12 months
  • Receiving income support
  • Income-related Employment and Support allowance
  • Income based job seekers allowance
  • Pensions credit guarantee card
  • You are named on a valid NHS tax credit exemption certificate
  • You are named on a valid HC2 certificate

(Payments may be made by cash or debit/credit card.)

  • Decontamination team

They are all fully supported by the administration team.


Patient responsibilities

  • You should provide as much notice as possible if you have to cancel or change an appointment
  • Please inform us of any change of details, so we can update your records.


Infection control

We take the safety of our patients and staff seriously. We follow all the recommended guidelines with respect to the decontamination of instruments and the use of disposable items and the cleaning of the surgeries.  If you have any queries please ask to speak to our infection control lead.

  • If you are unhappy about any aspect of our service, please talk to a member of staff.  We are always happy to receive feedback on our service
  • There are leaflets in the waiting area giving details of our customer service department
