Greenfields is a specialised unit that can be accessed by women which aims to provide individualised care, treatment and recovery for women with severe and enduring mental health problems in a safe and supportive environment.

Greenfields provides recovery for service users who may have received a period of treatment in a more secure environment, an acute facility or for those who have been unable to function in their home environment. The typical length of stay is expected to vary from between six and eighteen months though it is recognised that some individuals may need longer term treatment.

The service provides benefits from a multi-disciplinary approach operating recognised processes and procedures. Continuous assessment will ensure maximum benefit to each person, with an emphasis of moving on to more independent accommodation.

Greenfields will provide a service for nine individuals requiring a women's only service in a 24 hour nurse staffed setting. In addition to this some day provision is available to former service users, where appropriate to need. An outreach service can also be offered to former service users for a period of time to aid the discharge process and to provide ongoing support to ensure individuals are able to maintain their independence and quality of life.

All service users' care falls within the framework of the Care Programme Approach and will have an allocated professional and a link care co-ordinator from community services where appropriate.

Greenfields provides a service to both informal service users and those detained under the Mental Health Act.

All referrals are sent to the Unit Manager by means of letter or current ePEX system. The referral will be discussed with the Unit Clinical Team. Appropriate staff will then be allocated to complete an assessment within two weeks of receipt of the referral. Written advice and feedback will be available within one week after the assessment has been completed. If the service is able to offer a placement, the referrer and the service user will be informed when a bed is available. The referrer will be made aware by ePEX, and the referral will then be discussed at the Whole Service Care Pathway.

The service users must be aware of the referral.
