Community Learning Disabilities: Helping you, your family or carer talk to other people about dementia

This part is to help you, and your family or carer talk to other people about dementia

You might want to tell your friends or people in your family or people you live with.

If you want to tell someone, first read the ‘Lets talk about dementia’ leaflet (Down Syndrome Scotland).

It is OK to ask your family or carers to tell people for you.

It is OK to tell your family or carers what you want other people to know.

Dear family/carers

This information is to help you support the person you care for to tell other people about their dementia.

This information is also designed to help you talk to other people about dementia and the changes they might see in the person you care for.

It is important that the person you care for is happy for you to tell other people.

You don’t have to share everything in this part of the pack.

Talk to the person with dementia and find out which information is best to share.

Think about which types of information are the best fit for the people you are going to be talking to.

You might have to change some things to fit the skills and abilities of the people you will be talking to. That is okay.

If you are worried or are finding it difficult to help people understand, please let the CLDT know at the next dementia review.
