Weight Management walk and talk

No need to book – just show up! Both walks start at 11am, meet 15 mins before.

Tuesdays: Central Park – meet at the front of the Life Centre

Fridays: Locally around Devonport/park – meet at the front of Brickfields (entrance)

Length: Easy walk, 30 mins. Long walk, 45 mins.

Aquafit

Plymouth Active, Life Centre and Plympton pool (these are the 4 aqua classes recommended for WM patients to try first – others are available)

Plympton Pool Aquafit – Monday at 11:30
Not Weight Management patient specific but a gentle class, 30 spaces. Access – graded steps.

Life Centre Aquafit – Tuesday at 10:30
Main pool. Not Weight Management patient specific but a gentle class. Access – standing lift or graded steps available.

Life Centre Aquafit – Thursday from 10 – 10:45, Thursday from 10:45 – 11:45
Both in diving pool. Weight Management patient specific. Access – standing lift or graded steps.

Please note: There are other Aqua sessions at these venues (including evening ones) but these 4 above are classed as the gentlest, held in shallow water, have good access and we feel a good place to start. YMCA Plymouth’s Exercise on Referral (EOR) Scheme provides exercise classes in a supervised environment for those patients affected by clinical conditions. Members of the EOR Scheme range in age, ability and fitness levels. People referred to us include those experiencing anxiety, hypertension, diabetes, obesity, back pain, angina, depression, osteoporosis, cancer, arthritis or other conditions.

EOR classes are conducted in a friendly, client centered fitness suite. Our aim is to provide advice and instruction on functional exercises and activities that will help you improve your health & fitness and make everyday tasks easier to perform.

12 weeks at approx. £60.00 attending 2-3 x week. Referral via GP or Medical Professional

Heart beat is a charity run gym, primarily set up for cardiac patients but now also open to the public. Patients can call for an initial appt and induction.

Membership: Adult: £8.00 per year, Adult session fee: £1.50

EOR is a 12-week physical activity programme for South Hams and West Devon residents over the age of 18 who are inactive or moderately inactive with certain medical conditions.

All patients will attend a one to one 1st assessment with an EOR Physical Activity Instructor; this will take up to 1hour. During the assessment the scheme will be explained in further detail, baseline measurements are taken, and goals are set.

Patients are issued a Fusion membership card and suitable gym times and exercise classes are identified. Ideally 2 sessions per week for the 12-week scheme. The 12 weeks costs £25 per month on direct debit.

Upon successful completion of the scheme patients will be offered a Fusion membership or pay as you go option to continue taking part in physical activity at the centre.

Please note *All sessions are group based and not one to one session.

Other

Argyle football – offers a variety of services and groups ranging from walking football, walking groups, recreational football, 12 week healthy lifestyle programs.

Cheesifit – offering online/face to face cheesy dance classes and pilates. Very affordable and inclusive.

Eldertree – activities, befriending, socials, exercise for the over 50’s in venues around the city. Patients can self refer.

Improving Lives – a charity supporting and inspiring people to improve their health and wellbeing and includes Active For All, Better Futures and other group sessions. Patients can self refer but Move and Groove users may benefit from a referral from HCP.

Improving Lives includes:

  1. Active For All – activity/resources for adults with physical disabilities and mental health difficulties.
  2. Better Futures – activity/resources for adults with learning difficulties including fun exercise session Move and Groove.
  3. Other groups include Age Positive, Long Term Conditions 4 week workshop.

Plymouth Active – Life Centre, Brickfields, Plympton, Lido. Reduced membership price for weight management patients. Look on Plymouth Active website.

Pisces Swimming Club – swimming for people with disabilities. Life Centre, Sunday mornings.
