2020: Year of the nurse

by | 18th February 2020 | News

Livewell Southwest is celebrating its nursing colleagues as a proud participant in the first  International Year of the Nurse and Midwife.

The World Health Organization is marking the 200th anniversary of Florence Nightingale’s birth with the global designation, in order to promote nursing as a career and shine a spotlight on the expertise and diversity of nurses.

Ruth May, Chief Nursing Officer for England, said: In 2020, the spotlight is on us: nurses and midwives are being celebrated not just in England but across the globe. This is the chance to highlight our vast and varied skills and the work we do, and to ensure our professional voice is heard and represented at the heart of all health and care decisions and policy.”

Dawn Slater, Director of People and Professionalism and Chief Nurse at Livewell said:

“I’m really excited to showcase the diverse nursing roles within Livewell this year. Nurses are a really important part of our amazing organisation and I can’t wait to celebrate and recognise their achievements.”

At Livewell Southwest we have a range of activities and events planned to celebrate Year of the Nurse and Midwife (YNM2020), including a monthly nursing vlog which will enable you to get to know some of our nurses a little bit more and understand the diverse roles we have in Livewell.

This month’s vlog features Di Green, Modern Matron at South Hams Hospital. In her vlog Di describes her role in a rural community hospital, her career journey and what she loves about being a nurse. To view Di’s vlog, click here.

To commemorate the campaign we’ll also be forming a choir, planting blue blooms to reflect the chosen colour of YNM2020, shining a spotlight on our nursing development programmes, and of course hosting a few tea parties!
