A newly qualified Social Worker has been recognised by a national award panel for the achievements of his first year in the profession.

Paul Caston has won a Gold Award at the Social Worker of the Year Awards, in the category of Newly Qualified Social Worker.

Judges praised Paul for being “a compassionate and principled social worker who has already driven meaningful change leaving a lasting impact” and noting his empathy and understanding to people going through incredibly challenging situations.

This is the only major national awards event for social work in England and attracts hundreds of entries every year with positive stories of outstanding social work.

Paul works with the Plymouth Community Forensic Team, which aims to support and safely manage the behaviour of people with mental health conditions which may otherwise lead to contact with the criminal justice system or admission to a secure hospital.

He was nominated for his award by Carol Johnson, his Assessed and Supported Year in Employment (ASYE) Assessor. Carol highlighted his creativity and person-centred work at Lee Mill Hospital, a low secure adult mental health unit. He was particularly commended in the areas of financial advocacy, inclusion of carers, and a new way of completing Social Circumstances Reports.

Paul was surprised to be initially shortlisted: “I must admit, I’m not usually very good at receiving compliments, but it’s wonderful to have my practice recognised in this way. This nomination also highlights how incredible the team I work with is. Without their support and collaboration, I don’t believe any of this would have been possible.”

Eva Jakobsen, Mental Health Directorate Manager said: “Paul has brought a ray of light into what can feel like darkness – his compassion, support, thoughtfulness, kindness is truly valued by all. I am incredibly proud for him and of him.”

As part of his award, Paul will receive British Association of Social Work membership and an invitation to a Parliamentary Reception held at the House of Commons in the New Year.
