Aquafit
Aquafit is a great way to get started with exercise as it is a fun, full body, non-impact workout where you can work at your own level.
There are a number of aquafit classes available locally including evening classes but these tend to be the gentlest, held in shallow water and have good access so may be a good place to start.
Plympton Pool Aquafit – Mondays and Thursdays at 11:30
Not Weight Management patient specific but a gentle class, 30 spaces. Access – graded steps.
Life Centre Aquafit – Tuesday at 10:30
Main pool. Not Weight Management patient specific but a gentle class. Access – standing lift or graded steps available.
Life Centre Aquafit – Thursday from 10 – 10:45, Thursday from 10:45 – 11:45
Both in diving pool. Weight Management patient specific. Access – standing lift or graded steps.

'Exercise on referral' gyms
There are several local gyms that provide supervised group exercise and support for people with clinical conditions under a scheme called exercise on referral.
To access these 12-week courses you will need a referral from a healthcare professional such as your GP, weight management practitioner or physiotherapist for example.
YMCA The YMCA Plymouth offers Active Health sessions which are inclusive fitness sessions for people who want support to keep or become active. These sessions are ideal for people who may have medical conditions or are recovering from injury, or for anyone simply looking for a more supportive approach to improving your own health and wellbeing and may not be sure where to start. The initial 8 weeks including your consultation are free and then there is a reduced charge for a further 6 months. You can be referred by your GP or Health Practitioner, or you can refer yourself.
Fusion Gyms provide EOR support for people in South Hams and West Devon (there is a cost for this course)
Joint pain program (Nuffield Health) Provide a free six month program for anyone with joint pain including a 12 week course followed by 12 weeks of free gym access and guidance. You can self-refer to the joint pain programs.
Other
There are many excellent active opportunities available across Plymouth and the surrounding area. Hhere are a few that our past patients have found useful:
Argyle football – offers a variety of services and groups ranging from walking football, walking groups, recreational football, 12 week healthy lifestyle programs.
Eldertree – activities, befriending, socials, exercise for the over 50’s in venues around the city. Patients can self refer.
Foulston Park offer all patients on the weight management program a 10% discount.
Gymphobics is a ladies only gym.
Improving Lives – a charity offering a wide range of services across Plymouth, designed to help people improve their health.
Plymouth Active – Life Centre, Brickfields, Plympton, Lido. Reduced membership price for weight management patients. Look on Plymouth Active website.
Plymouth Heartbeat is a charity run gym which is open to the public at a significantly reduced cost compared to many gyms and provides support for anyone with existing health conditions.
Pisces Swimming Club – swimming for people with disabilities. Life Centre, Sunday mornings.
