What you can expect as a patient when arriving at the Lee Mill Unit
When you (a patient) arrives at Greenfields, you are welcomed by a member of the nursing team and introduced to the ward environment. An initial assessment is completed to gather essential information about your mental and physical health, personal preferences and support needs. This includes a discussion about current medication, risk history and recovery goals.
You are then shown to your bedroom and given a welcome pack along with a bedroom and separate key to a locked cupboard for valuable items. A nursing team is allocated to support continuity of care, they will then work together to coproduce a Personalised Care care plan. You are encouraged to participate in orientation activities, which include a tour of the ward, meeting staff and peers, along with an overview of routines and the therapeutic programme.
Security on the ward
If you are a voluntary patient you cannot be prevented from leaving the unit, however, staff will require you to complete a brief safety assessment before a period of leave takes place, performed by a registered nurse, including a return plan and notifying your family where appropriate. A description of your clothing is also recorded to support any follow-up if required.
If you are detained, you will require a Section 17 leave request to be prescribed by your Clinician.
Our unit is an ‘open rehabilitation ward’ but the front door is locked on the outside to ensure safety, although there is a ‘green exit’ button for you, your visitors and staff to exit the building.
Visiting times
As a patient, you are entitled to have people visit you on the unit, if you wish to.
Your family. friends and visitors can come to the unit between 15:00 – 20:00, Monday – Friday. Visits are also possible on weekends and times can be more flexible.

What activities are available to me as a patients?
Activities in patient bedrooms are often more low-stimulation, self-led or therapeutic including reading, TV, mindfulness, arts, personal care, phone calls and resting.
Shared spaces encourage social interaction, routine building and engagement including games, quizzes, films. The therapeutic groups also take place in the shared spaces such as baking, creativity, exercises, relaxation, recovery focused groups and activities of daily living.
Access to internet on the ward
As a patient, you are welcome to use the unit’s Wi-Fi freely. We kindly ask that everyone respects each other’s privacy and avoids taking phone calls in a way that may disturb others.
What will my care look like once i have left the ward?
Aftercare is the ongoing support received after discharge from the unit to help maintain stability, independence and wellbeing in the community. This may include ongoing support from community mental health services, follow up phone calls, crisis planning and outreach visits.
Aftercare is a planned, coordinated part of discharge that ensures continuity of care and reduces the risk of relapse or readmission. It involves handovers to community teams, outreach support, liaising with family or carers and developing a clear discharge and relapse prevention plan to ensure a smooth and sustainable transition into the community.
