Toilet Training Preparation
Toilet training is an important developmental milestone, and every child will become ready at their own pace. Taking time to prepare and establish positive routines can help make the process easier and more successful for both children and parents.
The following strategies may help support your child’s readiness for toilet training:
- Ensure your child drinks plenty of water and other non-sugary fluids throughout the day to help maintain healthy bladder and bowel habits.
- Change nappies promptly when wet or soiled. This helps children become more aware of the difference between feeling wet and dry.
- Provide short periods of nappy-free time, particularly after your child has had a wee or poo, to help them recognise their body’s signals and develop awareness of when they need to use the toilet.
- Encourage your child to sit on the potty or toilet regularly, particularly after waking up and after meals, when they are naturally more likely to need a wee or poo.
- Make potty or toilet sitting a relaxed and positive experience, without pressure or expectations.
- Encourage boys to sit down for all wees during the early stages of toilet training. This can help them fully relax their pelvic floor muscles and may make it easier for them to pass a bowel motion if needed.
Offer praise and encouragement for effort and participation rather than focusing solely on successful use of the potty or toilet.
If you have any concerns or questions about your child’s toileting, bladder or bowel habits, please contact your Health Visiting Team. We can provide first-line advice and support, discuss any concerns you may have, and, where appropriate, arrange Toileting Support Visits with one of our Family Health Workers to help you and your child achieve successful toileting outcomes.
