  • Common Mental Health difficulties such as anxiety & depression


How to access our service:

We encourage you to make a self-referral to our service if you are:

  • Experiencing depression anxiety or PTSD.
  • 16+ years old.
  • Ready to start working on your problems and able to attend regular appointments.
  • Registered with a Plymouth GP.
  • Not currently receiving support from other mental health services.

Treatments we offer:


Plymouth Talking Therapies is not suitable for people:

  • Who are a high risk to themselves or others, such as current risk of suicide or serious self-harm.
  • Using other mental health services, such as the Community Mental Health Team.
  • Who have current or severe and enduring mental health needs and as such require specialist services.

Plymouth NHS Talking Therapies provide treatment for Depression and/or Anxiety disorders relating to specific long-term health conditions. Treatment through Plymouth Talking Therapies help patients understand the interaction between their physical health and mental health, enabling patients to manage their symptoms and improve quality of life.

You can access the Long Term Conditions (LTC) pathway by talking to your physical health professional from one of the teams below:

  • Cardiac and Respiratory Team
  • Diabetes Specialised Nurses within the Primary Care Network or the Diabetes team, University Hospitals Plymouth (UHP)
  • Mustard Tree, UHP
  • Immunology, UHP

We can also provide mental wellbeing support if you are struggling with ongoing physical symptoms that bother you.

For professionals: If you are professional referring an individual, they should meet the criteria for Talking Therapies. This can be reviewed via the Professional Referrals page or by clicking on the flow chart.

By completing the professional referral form you are agreeing that you have read and understood the service criteria, and you believe that the patient will gain from treatment within the Talking Therapies service.

Please Note: GP practices should download the referral form and can submit attached to the E-Referral to Plymouth Talking Therapies. All other healthcare professionals can email the referral form as an attachment.

NHS Plymouth Talking Therapies is not an emergency service

When struggling, it is not uncommon for people to have difficult thoughts or feelings of hopelessness.

We are not an emergency service, so it is very important that you seek help from the right sources if you are having thoughts of hurting yourself:

First Response Service via NHS 111 (24/7 mental health crisis line – select the mental health option)

If there is a life-threatening situation you need to contact emergency services on 999 or present at the nearest A&E department (Derriford Hospital).

For all non-emergency medical/mental health interventions please contact your GP during normal working hours.
