CAMHS Neurodiversity: Learning Disability Team

Who are we?

The Learning Disability Team work with young people 5- 18 years, who have a learning disability, range of mental health difficulties and behaviours of concern.

What does the CAMHS Learning Disability Team do?

We work with young people and families to understand their needs and support them to have equal access to the right support, opportunities, services, and most importantly to live a fulfilled life.

We start this process by gathering  information by seeing children at home and in school.

Speaking with parents, school and other who know the young person.

Sensory Profile Assessment

Everybody experiences the world around them in different ways.

Sometimes how your brain understands information from your senses can make it difficult to join in with everyday activities.

A Sensory Profile Assessment will help us understand your child’s sensory needs and how they experience the world.

The Seven Sensory Systems

Activities of daily living

We will complete an assessment of activities of daily living (eating, getting dressed, playing, going out in the community, etc.)

Behaviours of concern

Behaviours of concern are behaviours that make it harder for the young person or the people around them to stay safe. For example:

Running away

Hurting themselves or others

Breaking things

This will help us understand why they are doing this and how to support them. For example:

Something is making them feel upset or angry

They need help

They are in pain

Behaviour Support Plans

From understanding behaviours, we can develop Behaviour Support Plans for families

Plans focus on the young person:

  • What makes them happy
  • Things they like and dislike
  • How they communicate
  • How to communicate with them
  • What they need
  • How to help the stay calm and safe
  • What to do if things get tricky

Family work to support parents and carers at home.

Full assessment by our team doctor with possibility of medication if required for their mental health needs.

Signposting to other services where appropriate.

Communicating with other agencies involved like Social Care, School and Physical Health professionals to make sure we are all providing the right support.
