Livewell Southwest launches new approach to children’s health services in Plymouth

by | 8th April 2019 | News

Livewell Southwest is delighted to announce the commencement of its contract to provide community health services for children, young people and families in Plymouth. The contract, which starts this week, will run for the next seven years.

The contract covers mental and physical health services, wellbeing and preventive services and care and support for those with special educational needs and disabilities.

Livewell’s approach to children’s services will take a ‘whole family approach’ – tailoring our service to individual and family strengths, needs and goals, working with partners and community service providers to deliver coordinated support wrapped around the whole family, from pre-conception  to transition to adulthood.

We’ll be using the iThrive framework, a needs-led approach to delivering mental health services for children, young people and their families where the emphasis is placed on prevention and the promotion of mental health and wellbeing.

As part of that, we will involve children, young people and families in shaping, evaluating and developing services, and will shift the focus to promoting and supporting physical and mental wellbeing. This emphasis on prevention will reduce the need for more specialist intervention and will ensure children and young people are supported at the earliest stage.

Our stated aim is that in seven years:

  • Plymouth will be recognised as a national exemplar for children services
  • Health problems, physical or mental, will be treated equally
  • Our use of digital technology will make it easier than ever for people who need our services to access them, with advice, support and requests for involvement readily available.

Adam Morris, chief executive of Livewell Southwest, said: “We’re delighted that the commissioners share our vision for the future of services for children, young people and families in the city. We are excited to be part of this opportunity to make sure these crucial services are the best they can be, and contribute towards improving and transforming lives of our future generations.

“Our service has been designed to have a lasting impact on every child and family’s future health, happiness and aspirations, establishing Plymouth as a centre of excellence for children and family wellbeing.

“By developing a pro-active, community-focussed approach to children’s health services, we aim to ensure that those who need help most get the level of service they require, while encouraging and developing healthy lifestyles across the region.”
