National No Smoking Day – make 2020 the year you quit for good!

by | 6th March 2020 | News

No Smoking Day is an annual event celebrated across the world which aims to help smokers to quit. In England, around 60% of smokers want to quit and currently around half of these try to quit using willpower alone. But you’re four times more likely to quit for good, with the One You Plymouth team’s specialist stop smoking advisors who can provide the support you need to stop smoking and build your  confidence to remain smoke free.

There are a number of ways our stop smoking advisors can support you to quit including one to one appointments, free Nicotine Replacement Therapy products, support if you want to switch to a vape, and behavioural support to help keep you motivated.

Why quit smoking?

Quitting dramatically increases your chances of living a longer life. It takes just 20 minutes for your body to have health benefits once you quit and start to repair the damage done by all those years of smoking.

Quitting smoking will not only help reduce the health risks to your family from secondary (passive) smoke but can also help encourage your loved ones to stop smoking too.

Being smoke free not only improves your health but will improve your bank balance too. On average, stopping smoking 20 cigarettes a day will help you save around £70 per week.

Plymouth woman Julie recently quit with the aid of our stop smoking service – you can read her story by clicking here.

Mel Edwards, Deputy Head of Health Improvement at Livewell Southwest, said: “No Smoking Day helps people to focus on a specific day to start their quit. This year’s message is “Stop smoking, start repairing”- make today the day for taking that first step on your quit journey!  Planning and preparing to become smoke free maximises your chances of successfully quitting. It’s a great opportunity to give it a go with others.”

Jan Potter, Head of Health Improvement at Livewell Southwest, said: “Smoking poses the most significant risk to health. It effects how long someone will enjoy a good quality of life, free from some chronic conditions such as respiratory disease, some cancers and cardiovascular disease. One You Plymouth have an incredible team of specialist advisors who really understand the challenges of giving up smoking and managing cravings. This NHS funded service is free and available across the city for easy access.
