The wellbeing walk provides a safe space for exercising.
The Women’s Wellbeing Walk, a collaboration between Livewell Southwest’s Wellbeing team, OneYou Plymouth, and the Ramblers, is offering a ‘safety in numbers’ approach for women to be active outdoors.
A recent study found that nearly three quarters of women fear exercising outside in the dark.
This initiative allows women to engage in outdoor activities without constant worry. Recent sessions have seen a surge in attendance, with some walks seeing upward of 25 participants.
The Women’s Wellbeing Walk goes beyond physical activity; it builds a supportive community, benefiting both physical and mental health. By emphasising safety and camaraderie, the walk is reducing fears and boosting confidence among Plymouth’s women.

Cathryn Keeble, Health Improvement Manager said: “People join us for safety in numbers and to connect. We’ve had women join after a breakup or who don’t feel comfortable exercising alone. Our goal is to create a supportive environment where women feel comfortable coming together after dark, socialising, and being more active.
Since we started, we have grown week on week, it varies, but we can see that it’s not only helping our ladies feel safe, but it’s also contributing to enhancing the overall mental health and wellbeing of our community”.
