Most people go through periods of feeling down, but when you’re depressed you feel persistently sad for weeks or months, rather than just a few days.

Some people think depression is not a genuine health condition, but they are wrong, it is a real illness with real symptoms. Symptoms of depression include feeling hopeless, losing interest in things you used to enjoy, poor sleep and changes in appetite.

When you feel depressed thoughts and behaviours can make you feel worse so you can stop a lot of things and think a lot more negatively. This can then maintain your depression.

Treatments for depression work in different ways. Some help you to start doing more things again to lift your mood by giving you a sense of enjoyment or purpose. While other support may look at changing any negative thoughts to help you feel more confident and motivated

You may also be offered counselling for depression which will focus on emotions and processing these linked to difficult life events.
