Depression

PTSD is an anxiety disorder caused by experiencing or witnessing a threat of harm and/or life, to self or to others that was violent. It can also be learning a close family member or a friend experienced a traumatic event. It is a normal reaction to an abnormal event. These events can leave people feeling fearful and helpless.

Someone with PSTD often relives the traumatic event through nightmares and flashbacks.

PTSD can also lead to sleep difficulties, changes in appetite, feelings of isolation, depression, stress and anxiety which can all impact a person’s day-to-day life.

PTSD can take years following the trauma to develop.

At Plymouth Talking Therapies we offer a 5-week psychoeducational trauma course as your first step to help you understand PTSD and give you tools and techniques to help manage it while you wait for support. You could then be offered trauma-focused CBT or eye movement desensitisation and reprocessing (EMDR).
